Probians enjoy “Steam & Cuisine” luncheon onboard Puffing Billy

Combined Probus Club of Blackburn South members first outing for 2017, was a “Steam & Cuisine” luncheon on board Puffing Billy, which travels from Belgrave to Lakeside.

The train was so long, 10 Open Carriages, plus 4 dining cars and a Guards Van, that the usual “NA” steam engines were replaced for this trip with “G42” which is a Bayer-Peacock Garret Steam Engine which was built in 1926. The Garret engines have 2 sets of driving wheels which allows for the use of longer trains.

37 members occupied 2 of the dining cars, and were served with “Natter Platters” on the forward journey, which consisted of a selection of various types of meat/cheese, with assorted condiments. On the return trip, we were given scones-jam & cream plus either tea or coffee.

On arrival at Lakeside, there is sufficient time to walk around the lake, or explore the miniature train layout which is adjacent to the station. As it was a warm sunny day, the outing was a great success, and thoroughly enjoyed by all in the group.
