Talking point

Recently, the members of the Probus Club of Donvale Hill Inc. visited the Telstra Telecommunications Museum in Burwood Road, Hawthorn.

They saw a wonderful display of telecommunication equipment including early to modern public and mobile telephones, switchboards, interactive working electro-mechanical and digital switching equipment, and even the original working Speaking Clocks.

The group was very fortunate to have three extremely knowledgeable volunteers explain all about the equipment and in many instances demonstrate how the equipment actually worked.

One of these volunteers was an ex-postal clerk. He amused the group by telling many stories about delivering telegrams. He even showed how telegrams were processed from beginning to end via Morse Code equipment. This was amazing.

Visits such as this reinforce just how much the world has changed in our lifetime and how quickly technology moves on.
