Probus Club of Gordon Park

Guest speakers

Our club has had many interesting and varied speakers in the past, and some more memorable that stand out, such as Jo Harris (Historian) “Early Wireless” The first direct wireless message from England to Australia.  Another was Ambre Hammond “Life as a Concert Pianist”. Jim Hayes ``Unbelievable true stories of Australia's Past. Graham Sims - “Bea Miles”.  Dr Peter Hobbins “The 1919 Influenza Pandemic in Sydney.  Cliff Crane-Banjo Patterson.  These are just a few of the past speakers our members have found to be engaging.

As our Probus club is a mixed club, my role as a Speaker Convener is to source out various speakers that I feel will be of interest to both our Female and Male members.  Also, a mix of interests, to include Historians, Arts, Authors, Antique collectors, Computers, Theatre. Etc.

During the time I have held this role, I have enjoyed getting to know the speakers through email and by phone, during the contact of booking and then a follow up nearer to the time. We invite a speaker to our meetings each month and they usually speak for up to 45mins including question time.  It is always my pleasure to meet them in person and to introduce them to our members to share their story.

Some of our current speakers this year (2021) have been Tom Sweeney “Director of the Willoughby Theatre”, Harry Ramani,”Cost of Living Specialist-Service NSW”, Andrew Phippen-Maritime Museums ”Early French Explorers”, and yet to come, Bill Soper-”Overview of Computer Pals,Turramurra”, Julie Sursok-Author “I’m now called a Senior”, Kenneth Buxton-Antiques Dealer, Wendy Swinbourne “Royal Flying Doctor Service”, Bill Hart “Iona Bagpipes.

I would love to see some new faces along to our club and to share these wonderful stories presented by our talented speakers.
