Introduction
Probus originated as an Association of retired and semi-retired men.
The word Probus comes from the words PROfessional and BUSiness groups.
The basic purpose of a Probus Club is to provide regular gatherings for those who, in retirement, appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and of a similar level of interest.
At an interest meeting sponsored by the Rotary Club of Willoughby on December 15th. 1987 it was decided to form the Willoughby Probus Club.
The Foundation Officers of the Club were:

Background of Formation
The Probus Club of Chatswood formed on March 31, 1981, reached a membership of 120 with a big waiting list. In August 1985 the Rotary Club of Chatswood decided to explore the formation of a second Probus Club in the Willoughby District.
Sid Pearce was placed in charge of arrangements and the following is an extract from the Chatswood Rotary Club’s President’s report for 1985/86.
“ The year highlighted several events during which we witnessed the formation of our second Probus Club, the Probus Club of Chatswood Central”.
This new club set itself a maximum membership level of 70 and this was reached in under five months. Sincere thanks to Sid Pearce for a great effort.”
Some time in the 1980’s after both Chatswood and Chatswood Central had attained their required membership, waiting lists appeared in both clubs.
The late Vic Steet, a foundation member of both clubs, suggested that it would be timely to form a third Probus Club in Chatswood. The suggested venue being Chatswood Bowling Club, with the thought that both clubs would be advantaged.
With this in mind, Vic Steet left it to Dick Deveson to contact the Bowling Club’s Management, with the plan.
The then President of the Bowling club the late Lloyd Prior soon convinced his Committee of the many merits of the idea. Within weeks we had sufficient men interested to hold a Meeting of Interest. The late Vic Steet at all times maintained his interest and help. Soon the meeting was arranged.
Formation Meeting
On 15 th. December 1987 the Rotary Club of Willoughby, the sponsor, called a meeting for 10.00 a.m. at Chatswood Bowling Club for the purpose of discussing the formation of a new Probus Club.
Dr. Warwick Bateman, Spokesman for the Rotary Club, was accompanied by Messrs. Peter Horsley, (President,) Reg Sinclair and Ian Boys from the Rotary Club, together with Dick Deveson, Vic Steet, Lloyd Prior and Bill Jacobs ( Rotary District 9680 Chairman)
The following business was adopted:
• 1. Resolution to form the Probus Club of Willoughby
• 2. Resolution to accept all applications received for Foundation Membership.
• 3. Election of a Steering Committee.
• 4. Decision of Venue and Meeting Dates.
• 5. Fixing an annual subscription of $6.00 p.a. with an Entrance fee of $4.00 and $1.00 at each meeting
• 6. Adoption of the Probus Constitution.
• 7. Arrangements for the Steering Committee to meet straight after the meeting to elect officers and set a date for the first monthly meeting of the Club.

A meeting was held immediately after the closing of the foundation meeting at which the following matters were resolved:

b. Scheduled the First Monthly Meeting of Willoughby Probus Club for Tuesday January 12 1988 at 10.00 a.m. at Chatswood Bowling Club.
The Probus Club of Willoughby Inc. changes to a Mixed Club.
At a meeting of the eight Probus Clubs in the Willoughby District on June 14 2006 the dwindling membership of some of these Clubs was discussed. It was found that mixed Clubs were successful in maintaining numbers.
The Management Committee of our Club therefore decided that we should change to a mixed Club to avoid falling membership numbers in the future.
It was resolved that our Club. put forward a Notice of Motion “That the Probus Club of Willoughby Inc. henceforth admits both men and women to full membership of the Club”
On November 21, 2006 the above Motion was put to members and passed unanimously for the admission of women to full membership of the club.
The result therefore was that our Club is now a mixed Club for men and women
Annual Holiday Trips
This Club is one of the very few Clubs able to organise very happy Annual Holiday Trips for members.
We started with the 2 Day Canberra Tour in October ‘89 where we visited the Floriade and Bowlie Station, followed by a 4 day trip to Merimbula in 1990. Later an 8 day tour of Broken Hill and districts.
In October 2001, we took off for three days to Canberra to have a look at the Floriade, the Tulip Farm just outside Canberra, Tidbinbilla etc.
In June 2002, we took off on a 2 day-1 night trip to Mudgee for a look at the vineyards and winemaking at it’s best and in October 2003 we took off for the Shoalhaven to visit Coolangatta Vineyards overnight and Arthur Boyd’s Art Gallery at Bundanon and in October 2007 we visited the Hunter Valley Gardens. In 2009 a 5 day/6 night trip to Bright in Victoria travelling by train to Albury and return to Sydney.
Such trips allow members to get to know each other better and so providing the means to form firm friendships.

Excerpts from the Milk Board Journal when the British Government decided to give free milk to children during the last war.
It was alleged that these extracts were from mother’s letters applying for free milk.
* Please send me free milk as I am expecting Mother.
* I have a baby 12 months old, thanking you for same.
* Please send me a form for cheap milk. I have a baby two months old and did not know anything about it till the other day, a friend told me.
* I cannot get “sick pay” and have six children. Can you tell me why?
* Milk is wanted for my baby. Father unable to supply.
* Sorry I have been so long filling in the form but I have been in bed for two weeks, and did not know it was running out until the milkman told me.
* I require extra milk as I am stagnant.
* Am forwarding my marriage certificate and two children, one of which has been a mistake as you will see.
* In accordance with instructions, I have given birth to twins, in the enclosed envelope.
* This is my eighth child - what are you going to do about it?
