Van Gogh comes to Canberra

Canberra is pumping life back into the art exhibition scene as it plays host to one of the greatest collections of European paintings in the world at the National Gallery of Australia.

The exhibition

Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London is an unprecedented exhibition that includes 500 years of art in 60 paintings and comprises the largest group of works ever to travel outside of Britain in the National Gallery’s 192-year history. 

Until June 2021, you can see it for yourself at the National Gallery of Australia.

Botticelli to Van Gogh features 55 of the world’s most famous and admired artists from the 15th to the turn of the 20th centuries, including Botticelli, Titian, Rembrandt, Vermeet, El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Turner, Constable, Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh.

This exhibition explores seven key periods in Western European art history:

  • The Italian Renaissance
  • Dutch painting of the Golden Age
  • Van Dyck and British Portraiture
  • The Grand Tour
  • Spanish art from the 17th century
  • Landscape and the picturesque
  • Birth of modern art

Highlights include Rembrandt’s Self Portrait at the Age of 34 (1640), Vermeer’s A Young Woman seated at a Virginal (c. 1670), and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers (1888).
