Loud and clear

The Hobart Macquarie Probus Club recently had an outing to the Tasmanian Maritime Radio (TMR) Station and attached museum.

From very small beginnings 40 plus years ago when a group of mariners decided to establish a basic radio network – which was manned by volunteers and provided communications in South Eastern Tasmanian waters – it has grown to the sophisticated volunteer organisation it is today.

TMR now has many radio/relay stations on the Tasmanian coastlines, at locations as remote as Maatsuyker Island on the far south coast of the state.

Recently the station relocated to a brand new building with state-of-the-art communications equipment that houses the operational consoles (Radio Room), Museum of Historic Communications Equipment and modern staff facilities.

TMR is a volunteer organisation that provides communications safety services to Tasmanian mariners.
