Yamba Trip

After every Probus trip, Bill Prendergast writes a poem detailing their activities. Recently, he and several other members of Chinchilla Probus Club returned from a trip to Yamba. Here, Bill reflects on the experience.

Palmer’s coach was ready and loaded,

With 19 Probians on board,

While most of the other 81 members,

Stayed at home and probably snored.

They soon chose their seats,

Quite orderly and quick.

And looking quite excited,

Maureen sat next to Mick.

President Jenny took her seat,

Up near the front she sat.

Looking quite chic, I believe,

Wearing her white Stetson hat.

While on the Mundubbera trip,

Three had caught something like the flu.

But that didn’t stop them going,

Not the two Johns and Dennis’ girl Sue.

This trip was down to New South Wales,

To a coastal town called Yamba.

Every day they saw something new,

And were impressed by the Jacaranda.

On receiving the keys to their cabin,

The Bender girls didn’t seem real keen.

You see they drew the short straw,

And got Villa number thirteen.

Old Dennis told Sue, all excited,

We’ve two bathrooms, mine & yours,

But on further inspection Sue found,

They only had one but with two doors.

As they had married into Scottish blood,

Both Lola and Pat enjoyed a stroll,

Through the Australian Scottish town,

Viewing the Maclean Tartan Power Pole.

Apparently at the Lawrence Bell Collection,

Therese got quite a surprise,

For there she saw such a likeness to John,

She couldn’t believe her eyes.

Heather and her friend Pam Brogan

Had a lovely view of the pond

But when the water dragon came visiting

They didn’t hang around long.

Every day the bus went past a sugar mill,

And Margaret got quite excited.

So one afternoon she was handed the mike,

And to speak she was invited

She told of working in the Sugar Lab,

When living in Mackay.

But then a young Geoff came along,

And soon she said, “goodbye”.

With their licence they tried to enter,

A club on Wednesday night

But something went wrong with the spelling

And their names didn’t come out right.

Elaine Rack's name changed to Pearl,

Geoff became a Russian Frank

Pam Bender became a Sender,

And poor old Brownie ended up just a blank.

The farewell dinner was a beauty,

But then they always are,

They ate, drank and sang a song,

With the bus driver playing guitar.

Day five they left Angourie Resort

Where each night they did stay.

Heading home, tired and weary,

After their action-packed time away.

That night as they climbed into bed

Ena said I’ve got a sore knee,

Go to sleep Brownie yelled,

Your supposed to be an “active retiree”.
