MINUTES of THE GENERAL MEETING held on (14th June 2022) at THE GOOLWA RSL CLUB

  1. 1.     MEETING OPENED – President Rob Haynes opened the meeting at 10:00am and reminded everyone to turn mobile phones off or down and indicated amenities and exit doors.  He reminded members that it was National Men’s Health Week.

  1. 4.     TREASURER’S REPORT – Daniel Glover
  • Balance in bank currently $1,217.81
  • A discussion took place regarding the Club’s bank account at the State Bank due to its closure in Goolwa and the possibility of moving the account to the Bendigo Bank it was resolved in consultation with the Treasurer that the account be left with State Bank for the time being.

  1. 5.     SECRETARY’S REPORT –
  • Correspondence –

Secretary reported that he had received advice about the Swan Hill excursion next year, that there was limited accommodation available.  The Goolwa Rotary holding a change over (of presidents) dinner. Rob Haynes and wife invited and will attend.  A letter of thanks and Probus pen to Ms. D. Keach for her address to the May meeting.

  • Members’ Corner –

G. Williams told us he had been born in Toowoomba in 1946 . He gained wide experience in the building trade in maintenance and insurance work he then entered the type-setting business, later re-entering the building maintenance trade.  He also spoke on his involvement with both Apex and Rotary clubs.

  •  July member’s corner – Gary Row Wandilla Station trip.  August – Chris Maynard Tassie trip.  September - ????.  October – Brian Tapping
  • President Rob circulated an events calendar list, July to December.  It is now on our website.
  • Guest Speakers
    • Today –today’s speaker is Bill Lowther.
    •  Bruce Scotland is to be our July speaker, with episode #4 of his life story.

Gary Row reported that he had circulated a schedule for future until the end of September.

Gary Row reminded members of the Christmas in July at the R.S.L. and a minimum of 30 people required he said there was a possibility of a visit to Steam Ranger and a visit to a glider club he was endeavouring to arrange on the 12th. October a rail trip to Stathalbyn

  1. 8.     GUEST SPEAKER –
  • Bill spoke enthusiastically of his dedication to see that people who do heroic and daring feats to assist others in danger are honoured and given acclaim.  He instanced one such action near Currency Creek by a local volunteer. He then spoke of his early life being raised by his mother in Portsmouth U.K. during WW2, which, because of its shipbuilding, was a prime target for German bombing. With many pictures he showed of bombers and the destruction they did to homes.  He spoke of his childhood including playing with unexploded bombs and torpedoes that left many members wondering if we were not lucky to have him as a guest speaker at all? He worked as a projectionist and for Corona soft drinks before joining The Kings Royal Rifles finding himself sent to Egypt during the Suez Canal crisis then home to England to marry and raise 3 children before returning to North Africa to Bahrain Tobruk and Libya as a refrigeration air-conditioning worker before coming to Australia and starting up Adelaide Hot Water Service.
