At a meeting held in the Tudor Towers (current Museum) on Thursday 05 August 1982 a motion to form a Probus Club was passed

This was the first Probus Club formed in what was then known as District 993, later to become D9930.

The club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Rotorua with the support of the Rotorua West Rotary Club abd the Rotorua Lakes Rotary Clubs

The mayor of the day John Keaney, apologised for the meeting, and the Rotorua District Council was represented by Dr John Harris, deputy mayo, who welcomed the formation of the club as providing a major benefit to the community

The original Constitution was introduced which stressed the objective of flexibility and simplicity

Dr Tom Trott was established as the Foundation President on a motion from Allan Oakley and seconded by Ted Hamill

The steering committe was established as the management committee on a motion from Jack Mills and seconded by Doug Burns

In addition to Dr Tom Trott they were:-

Subscriptions were set at $10 with meetings to be held at the Tudor Towers on the first Thursday of the month with the first meeting speaker being the Hon Harry Lapwood

The first Probus Club was formed in Great Britain in 1965 (sponsored by Rotary)

The first club in NZ was formed in the Kapiti Coast in 1974 and the first Austarlian Club was formed in Hunters Hill in 1976

The was a limit of 150 members

The Newsletter of November 1982 announced the Christmas meeting, inviting wives, to be held at the Tudor Towers with a cost of $10 and a glass of wine would cost 80c. The guest speaker was to be Constable June Berry, speaking of her trip to Canada representing Zonta NZThe newsletter of November 1983 detailed 103 members

New members were to pay $10 and existing members $5 for the year

Also noted was an overseas trip organised by an Auckland person to travel to Sydney for a 1 night stay and on to Bali for 9 nights , including airfares, transport and accommodation the cost was $1360
