ACHACHA PLANTATION TOUR – 17 October 2017

Twenty-seven members enjoyed a lovely visit to the Achacha Plantation at Palm Creek, Giru, where Bruce intoduced us to this new fruit to us! After morning tea we were shown around part of the plantation and could look at the trees. This is the first commercial plantation in the world but others are being established.

The Achacha is a highly prized tropical fruit. It has been cultivated for many years in small holdings and domestic orchards at the foot of the Andes in the Amazon basin of Bolivia. In its home country it is known as achachairu however, given the Aussie propensity for abbreviation, the last three letters have been dropped and the name Achacha adopted (think of "cha cha" and add an 'a' in front).

Helen introduced us to SLOW FOOD – if you want to know more talk to someone who went. We then adjourned for lunch at the Giru International Hotel.
