Welcome to the website of the West Wollongong Probus Club.
Probus is a community service activity of Rotary clubs for active members of the community who are retired or no longer working fulltime. Its basic purpose is to advance intellectual, cultural and social interests among adult persons. The West Wollongong Probus Club Inc. was formed on 14th May 1984 and operates under the Standard Probus Constitution.
A monthly meeting is the main point of contact for our members. The Club meets between 10.15 am and 12.30 on the 2nd Monday of each month (3rd Monday when the 2nd is a public holiday) at Wests Illawarra Leagues Club, 1 Hargreaves St Unanderra. The room has a good public address system and good sized TV screen so all can see and hear comfortably. Instead of a monthly meeting in May we celebrate our Club’s Anniversary with a luncheon. Similarly in December in lieu of a meeting we have a Christmas luncheon
The meetings provide an opportunity for members to enjoy each other's fellowship informally over a tea or coffee immediately after the more formal part of the meeting. Each meeting commences with adoption of the previous meeting minutes and correspondence, followed by brief Officer’s portfolio reports. We then break for Fellowship over Morning Tea. Around 11.00 am our guest presenter takes the floor for the second half of the meeting to talk on a topic of interest to members. Audio/visual equipment is used to enhance presentations.
The club's Activities/Outings Officer organises visits to places of interest every month or so. These visits can be comfortably completed within a day, with transport to and from the event being by train, coach or carpooling. Members have varied interests and so a diverse range of visits are organised to cater for them. A trip away is usually held each year.
A coffee morning is held at a different venue at 10.15 am on the first Wednesday of each month. This “Interest Activity” has proven very popular.
A picnic lunch is held on the third Tuesday of each month starting around 12 noon. BYO picnic gear and lunch etc.
A monthly newsletter “The Bulletin” issues by email/post about a week before the monthly meeting. It includes details of upcoming activities, monthly coffee morning venues, guest presenters and much more. A ‘fridge’ Calendar of Upcoming Events accompanies the Bulletin. Minutes of the previous meeting are also included which allows us to get through the more formal part of the meeting more speedily.
Interested persons are most welcome to come along to any of our meetings/activities for a look see! To arrange a visit simply contact the Secretary Colin Johnton
