The inception of the Whittlesea Probus Club began in the latter half of the year 2000 when the Rotary Club of Whittlesea called a public meeting for a show of interested people in joining a proposed new Club. This meeting was held in the Church of England Hall at the back of Christ Church, Whittlesea.
This first meeting proved to be very popular and it culminated in two more follow up meetings, the consequence of which came the agreement that there would be a new Club in Whittlesea called “The Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea.” This club later became “Incorporated” by one of the inaugural Members, the late Trevor Wood. The first meeting took place at the Whittlesea Bowls Club on the 7th May, 2001 at 10.00am and the room was bursting at the seams, the buzz was amazing and the room was filled with expectation.
The Inaugural President was Joy Chatfield (Dec); the Secretary was Alan Dunscombe (Dec) and the Treasurer was Alistaire McKenzie (Dec). We still have the table cloth in use today which all the new Members present on that day, signed for prosperity.
The quota for this Club was originally capped at 110 Members but due to popular demand, it later increased to 120 Members due to the popularity and need for this type of Club.
After all of these years, there are currently 9 of the Inaugural Members still enjoying the fun, friendship and fellowship this Probus Club offers to all of it’s Members. Please come and visit us to see what it’s all about, you will be made most welcome. Still at the Whittlesea Bowls Club, 101 Church Street, Whittlesea at 9.15am for a 9.30am start.
