The pioneer travellers from Melbourne found it difficult not only the conditions of the rough tracks but also with the bushrangers, especially in the dense forest which became known as the Black Forest.  It was a relief when the travellers reached the end of the woods and emerged into the open, the small settlement started and became known as Woodend in 1851.
