AVOIDING SCAMS
‘SPOT A SCAM'
The Commission is the Federal Government regulator for on-line safety.
They provide a range of free training / information modules on this topic through their Be-Connected website (www.beconnected.esafety.gov.au); across topics like scams from investments, travel apps, and online shopping: and safe use of iphones, email and banking.
Main Types of Scams arise from …
- Contact supposedly from trusted organisations; eg the ATO, banks.
- Claims of missed parcel deliveries, bills not paid
- Service provider alerts; eg ‘your linkt account has expired’.
- Friendship / romance connections
- Promise of unclaimed monies / ‘update your personal details’.
- Investment schemes
Seniors are at Risk because …
- We are more trusting
- We’re likely to have spare funds
- We have landlines, that are called randomly by scammers
How to Reduce the Risk of being Scammed.
- Don’t reply to people talking about ‘financial troubles or opportunities’.
- Ignore pop-ups on your screen
- Don’t click to open or sign-in to an unknown contact
- Don’t provide contact or personal details
- Ring to confirm with any ‘trusted organisation’
- Check for unusual sender email addresses, spelling mistakes.

- Scamwatch
