Guest Speaker

We were honoured and privileged to have Dr John Arnason, Distinguished Professor of Biology (emeritus) University of Ottawa, Canada speaking to us.  John spoke on his research work in phytochemistry in the study of ethnopharmacology ( the scientific study of materials used by ethnic and cultural groups as 'medicines’) of North and Central America.  Traditionally this has been to characterize plant materials so that they can be produced reproducibly for commercial use or to identify active principles in unstudied traditional medicines for drug discovery. With new decolonial objectives coming from Indigenous communities, emphasis has shifted to evaluating the safety and efficacy of traditional medicines and preparations for community use.  His talk was accompanied by interesting photos and was easy for us all to understand.  At the end John was very helpful answering member’s questions.
