Functions.

We have had some very successful events since the last newsletter.

The tour of the Melbourne Courts was well attended.

Melbourne Legal Precinct by Donna Vittorio

February 19th members of Warrandyte had an excursion into Melbourne’s Legal Precinct.

The focal point being, the intersection of Williams and Lonsdale Street, whose four corners are occupied by; the Supreme, the County and the Magistrate Courts of Victoria.

Led by our knowledgeable leader Marilyn, 18 members gained insight into how our court systems run and the purposes of each court.

We were privileged to view some court proceedings in each area, as most hearings in Victoria are open to the public, though some may be closed in special circumstances.

Each Court building was an example of Melbourne architecture throughout the century.

The Victorian County Court a modern court complex is a landmark building combining modern court design principles with state-of-the-art technology, stands in contrast to the nearby 19th-century neo-classical Supreme Court.

The highlight for me personally was exploring the Supreme Court library and reference material. It provides services that support the administration of justice in Victoria.

The library is a beautiful freestanding structure within the central quadrangle of the Supreme Law Court and is symmetrical with a dome covering.

Three storeys high, it is filled with hundreds of law books and references, accessible by enormously tall ladders. The top level houses a gallery.

The group gathered for a delightful lunch at the “County Café” serviced by a most accommodating host that made us feel so welcome.

I’m sure all participants had a most enjoyable and informative day.

Gulf Station Historic farm tour on 6th March was a very interesting day. We had a tour of the house which was organised by John Welch.

Although some of the original fittings and fixtures have been removed it was interesting to see the house and hear about the owners.

The original kitchen is still in place as is the laundry. We had lunch there overlooking the property.

Barefoot bowls 7th March was a great fun night.

Many of us had never done bowling before and there was lots of laughter from everyone.

A big thanks to the Donvale bowls club for a wonderful night and a great meal. The bowls tutors were excellent and very patient.
