Upper & Lower Case

The terms are said to have originated in the very early years of the printing press. The print copy was created by using metal letters which were individually placed into a frame before inking and then pressed onto the paper. The stock of metal letters was kept in cases (trays), the more-frequently used small letters were kept close by in the lower case; the lessor used capital letters were kept in the upper case. Hence the terms upper and lower case.
