On Wednesday 7th November, 2012 Holroyd Probus Life Member Allen Brierley was presented with an Outstanding Service Award.

The presentation to Allen was made by Allan Ezzy, APM & Mayor of Holroyd Council Ross Grove.

Alderman A. L. Brierly was first elected to Holroyd Council at the 5th December, 1962  Ordinary Election, a Westmead Progress Association representative, in the Pitt Ward.

He was elected to Council for a second term at the Ordinary Election on 4th December, 1965 and subsequently re-elected to Council at the elections in 1968, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1980 and 1983.

He was instrumental in establishing Holroyd's Meals on  Wheels service in 1960, holding the postion of committee Treasurer and delivering meals once a month.  Upon his retirement he became more involved with them, and would later describe that the establishment of this service was one of his main achievements on Council.

This Award is presented to recipients who have  completed a cumulative total of at least 20 years service to Local Government in New South Wales.

For Councillors who continue to serve, and at retirement have completed 25 years or more, a bar is affixed to the original medal with a total number of years of service inscribed on it.

This award was indeed well deserved and our Probus Club Members are very proud of Allen.

Congratulations !!!!

CONGRATULATIONS ALLEN BRIERLEY---OUR CENTENARIAN.

Allen, you are so loved and respected by alll our members thatr we wanted to celebrate this special day with you.

To tell you a little about Allen's early life:

Born last century on 4th June, 1918 just 5 monthe before the end of the First World War, Allen grew up in the country at Canowrinda. He joined the army during the Second World War and was stationed in Western Australia.

Returning to Sydney at the conclusion of the war, he married his sweetheart Nella in 1947. They raised a family of four boys and one girl and established a drapery store in Westmead, close to the area where Allen has a reserve "The Allen Brierley Reserve", named in his honour.

He was elected to Holroyd Council in 1952, again in 1956 and served on the council for over twenty-three years, for which he was awarded an "Outstanding Service Award."

Allen's Probus life began when he was on the steering committee to establish the procedures necessary to set up our Probus Club.

Allen is a Foundation Member, Past President and Life Member and thus holds this unique distinction which no one else can achieve.

He became a Foundation Member when he joined the club on 9th September, 1986 at the inaugural meeting. He is No. 1 member, numbers being allocated alphabetically. Elected Vice President in 1988 he became the 3rd President in 1989. During his time as President "The Holprobusiness" was introduced and continues to this day as our main means of communication. He served on the committee for several years.

In the minutes of 1993 Allen is named as one of the gentlemen who registered attendance and looked after morning tea....Twenty five years later he is still doing the same thing!!!!!

In 2002 he was awrded Life Membership for outstanding service to the club and this was presented in April, 2003.

He was Walks Convenor for some years and led many walks. He joined in the outings and extended outings and was on the committee in 2011 to organise the 25th Probus Birthday Luncheon. Just in recent years he travelled to Norfolk Island with the Club. He continues to join in as many activities as he can. We all look forward to going to Allen each meeting to have our names marked off on the Attendance Sheet, because we know we will be greeted with Allen's lovely smile and cheerful words.

WELL DONE ALLEN! WE WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY AND HEALTH AND HAPPINESS FOR THE FUTURE YEARS.
