Probus Club of Bobbin Head

The next General Meeting will be held at Turramurra Bowling Club on Momnday 8th August 2022 at 10:00 am. Visitors are most welcome. Our speaker will be Dr. Richard Harris on Medical  and other Adventures.

At our May meeting, our speaker was Rosemary McCulloch who entertained us on Behind the Scenes at the BBC.

In her entertaining and informative presentation, Rosemary reminisces about her experiences during the 17 years that she spent working behind the scenes at the BBC and the many roles that she filled during that time - including that of news reader, interviewer, sound engineer and sound effects person, to name a few.

Rosemary describes the stress of working on live broadcasts when things don’t go quite as planned and shares personal glimpses of the famous people - such as David Attenborough – whom she met during the course of her career.

Rosemary McCulloch Background

Prior to coming to Australia 15 years ago, Rosemary McCulloch was a lecturer and tutor in public speaking and presentation skills in UK, Europe and Singapore. Before that, she worked for BBC Radio for seventeen years as an overseas announcer, producer and interviewer. She is now President of U3A Northern Beaches which has a healthy membership of just over 1,200.

Concerts and Shows

Live at Lunch

Visions, Fugitives and The Lovers, 18th May 12 noon. Tickets $34

Brilliant pianist Simon Tedeschi and stellar flautist Jane Rutter perform works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich & others, including Tchaikovsky’s Mélodie from Souvenir d'un Lieu Cher Op. 42 (which inspired the song These Are the Things I Love), the Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet, Prokofiev’s Visions Fugitives, and selections from his Romeo & Juliet Suite (Dance of the Knights, Dance of the Antilles Girls). This beautiful concert coincides with launch of Simon’s first book Fugitive, a work using Prokofiev’s Visions Fugitives as a thread - that meditates on music, poetry, memory and literature.

“We deplore the war on Ukraine waged by Putin’s Russia. Yet we are pleased to present a program close to our hearts. Russian Music by Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff Tchaikovsky is core to the classical musicians’ staple. Art should be able to seperate from politics, and in this instance we have decided to proceed with the repertoire, our hearts heavy as we witness the suffering of innocent people. The composers we play were great international artists first, citizens of their countries second. We hope you enjoy this lovely programme, knowing our feelings on this important issue.” -Simon Tedeschi and Jane Rutter

The Best of Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Guy Noble and Jane Rutter, 6th. July 12 noon Tickets $34.

This will be popular, so please book and pay early, so we can get tickets together.

Outings

CRUISE THE HAWKESBURY ON THE RIVERBOAT POSTMAN

Wednesday 25th May

Come cruising with us on the Hawkesbury Mail Boat, the famous Riverboat Postman, and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the lower Hawkesbury River as we deliver the mail and other essentials (the odd bottle of whiskey or rum...) to the river-access-only settlements upriver from Brooklyn.

Catch the 9.24 am train from Hornsby Station to Hawkesbury River Station where there are now lifts installed, so no stairs! For those who might prefer to drive please note that there is very limited parking at Brooklyn.
We leave the wharf at 10.00 am regardless of the weather and return at approximately 1.10 pm. The return train to Hornsby Station departs at 1.27 pm.
The first Riverboat Postman started the run in 1910, and the tradition continues today with Hawkesbury Cruises, the current custodian of this fabulous day trip. Our skippers are locals who have lived in the area their whole lives - be entertained by the stories of the river whilst cruising in comfort up this spectacular waterway. Be assured that at least 95% of what they say is true... Enjoy real coffee, hot tea and home made Anzac biscuits. Lunch will be a ploughman’s lunch.

PRICE - $49 Per Person

Registration is essential with Julie Killin.

Visit to Vaucluse House - Friday 24th June 2022

Today Vaucluse House is one of the few 19th century houses on Sydney Harbour retaining a significant part of its original estate setting. One distinguishing surviving characteristic of the 19th century estate is its careful division into specific areas, both functional and ornamental, such as pleasure garden, kitchen garden, rear service yard, paddocks, carriageway, creek, estate backdrop, beach paddock.

Vaucluse House is significant because of its association with the Wentworth family and their aspirations. It has a large collection of surviving original documentary evidence relating to the house, its contents and occupants. There are a number of extant buildings and gardens and the house retains relative intactness of form, interior space and detailing predating 1900.

Getting There

We will catch the 9.03am train from Turramurra station to Town Hall Station. Then it is a short walk to Park Street, Stand G where we catch 325 bus at 10.04am to Vaucluse Park followed by a one minute walk to Vaucluse House.

Cost - $12 payable by the June General Meeting on Thursday 16th June at the very latest. Bookings are required by Friday 10th June 2022

WINTER YULEFEST

ROBERTSON HOTEL WINTER YULEFEST (FORMERLY RANELAGH HOUSE) MONDAY 25th JULY 2022

Join us for a fabulous Yulefest luncheon in the warmth of this Grand Historic Hotel.

We will enjoy a glass of house made mulled wine by the roaring fire before our delicious 3 course lunch with all the trimmings.
Built in 1924, the Robertson Hotel has a rich history and today it retains much of its original ambiance but with a fresh and modern twist.

It was named “most luxurious Hotel in the Commonwealth” back in 1925 and in 1947 the building briefly became a Franciscan Friary and Seminary.
The Hotel is set on 14 acres including heritage rainforest surrounding impeccably maintained gardens. The new owners of the property are quickly restoring its reputation for providing outstanding hospitality.

Our journey down to the Southern Highlands see us following the coast with morning tea at Sublime Point which offers spectacular views over the Illawarra. We will then take the picturesque drive over Macquarie Pass to Robertson and our return sees us travelling back to Sydney through Bowral and Mittagong.

A UNESCO World Heritage-listed site in the heart of historic Sydney, the Hyde Park Barracks is an extraordinary living record of early colonial Australia. Visitors will be given a sanitised iPod and headphones on arrival.

Walking Group

The walk on Monday 16th May is a visit to Fagan Park to enjoy the autumn colours, a gentle stroll around the gardens and a picnic lunch. Bring morning tea, lunch and a chair. The Coffee Kiosk is not open on weekdays.
